Is non-alcoholic beer halal?
By the Non-Alcoholic Beer Guide team · Updated
The two main views
Permissible if it cannot intoxicate: Dar Al-Ifta (Egypt) allows drinks with minute amounts of alcohol if large quantities still do not intoxicate. The Saudi Permanent Committee (Fatwa 7168) said beer labelled alcohol-free is allowed on the same test.
Not halal at any strength: Singapore's Muis Fatwa Committee rules non-alcoholic beer non-halal even at 0.0%, because of how it is made and marketed. Indonesia's LPPOM MUI will not certify 0% beer, because its rules bar product names that refer to haram products.
Why the brewing method matters
Some scholars separate beer that had alcohol removed from beer brewed to stay low. A Darul Iftaa answer allows the second but not the first, while still advising people to avoid both. Certifiers such as the American Halal Foundation audit fermentation, residual alcohol and any de-alcoholisation step.
Certified or self-declared
A brand saying "suitable for" is self-certification. A halal certificate means an independent body has audited the process. No beer in our ranking carries a halal certificate.
FAQ
Is 0.0% beer halal?
Scholars differ. Some allow it if it cannot intoxicate; Singapore's Muis and Indonesia's MUI do not.
Is any alcohol-free beer halal certified?
None of the beers we rank is halal certified. Look for a certificate from a recognised body rather than a brand claim.
